Family Advisory Council
Families of patients know first-hand what it means to have a child in the hospital. That’s why we formed the Family Advisory Council – a team of families and our clinicians and managers who works together and shares ideas to continually improve the care we provide. The council’s guidance strengthens our collaboration, improves communication and empowers families to have a voice in their child’s care.
We select advisors who represent the many types of families who come to us for care. They include parents and other adult family members from a variety of ethnicities, races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds, and from across the variety of services used.
Family advisors attend monthly two-hour meetings at Advocate Children’s Hospital or via conference call. Together, the council members decide on the day and time. Family advisors serve a two-year term and positions are volunteer and unpaid. A light meal or snack is served at each meeting.
The council’s steering committee of leaders, clinicians and other team members from Advocate Children’s Hospital review applications and conduct in-person interviews with selected families. If your family is selected for the council, you’ll need to:
- Pass a criminal background check
- Submit immunization records
- Receive any necessary vaccinations
- Take HIPAA training
- Sign a confidentially agreement
You don’t need any specific experience or background to serve on the Family Advisory Council, but you should be able to:
- Positively express your opinions
- Respect other members and recognize they may not share your point of view
- Work in partnership with people of different backgrounds
- Serve for a two-year term
