What are fetal heart conditions?
Before they’re even born, babies can develop heart conditions that may become serious as they get older. Often, these conditions arise when parts of the heart don’t grow properly.

When should you see a cardiac fetal heart specialist?
You obviously can’t see your baby inside your body to observe any symptoms. Contact us during your pregnancy if you have any of these conditions:
- Heart abnormality in your baby that was detected by a routine ultrasound
- Your baby has an unusual heart rate or rhythm
- Conditions of your own such as diabetes or connective tissue disease
- Any exposure to chemicals or infections during your pregnancy
It's also important to contact us if you have a family history of heart disorders or if testing uncovers a suspected genetic disorder. Our cardiovascular genetics program can give you guidance about genetic testing.
Fetal heart program diagnosis & treatment
Our fetal cardiologists are dedicated to early diagnosis using ultrasound-based noninvasive tests. We coordinate care with any other doctors you are seeing so we can avoid extra or duplicative testing for you or your baby.
If your baby is diagnosed with a fetal heart condition, they’ll need monitoring by experts. At our treatment centers, our team makes sure your child receives the attention and observation they need.
In some cases, treating your baby’s heart condition before they're born is safer than waiting until after birth. This is especially so for heart rhythm abnormalities. Our heart experts work with fetal care specialists to improve the health of your baby’s heart with medication or a combination of treatments.
