Pediatric neurological disorders we treat
At our neurosciences center, we diagnose and treat a wide range of pediatric neurological disorders from the routine to the complex. Experienced neurologists and neurosurgeons provide expert, compassionate care for your child when they have problems affecting their brain, spine, peripheral nerves or muscle control.
Children generally see neurologists for conditions that can be treated with medicine and may not show up on MRI, X-ray or other kinds of imaging. Children usually see neurosurgeons for conditions that are treated with surgery and do show up on imaging.

Diagnosing pediatric neurological disorders
We take a time-sensitive but thorough approach to determining what’s affecting your child. While the exact method varies by child and condition, our diagnosis for pediatric neurological conditions generally follows certain steps:
- Initial evaluation: We ask how your child feels and what symptoms you may have observed. We discuss previous care for the complaint (such as a trip to your pediatrician), as well as family medical history. We then conduct a physical examination.
- Neurological examination: We evaluate your child’s neurological functions, including cognition, vision, hearing, reflexes, balance and movement. Learn more about what to expect from a neurological examination.
- Working diagnosis: We make a preliminary diagnosis based on the gathered information and decide on the next course of action. We may recommend additional testing or move on to working on options for treatment. In some cases timing is critical, so we start care while waiting to confirm the diagnosis.
- Testing: We may order blood tests or imaging to more conclusively determine what’s going on. We may also perform specialized neurological testing such as an electroencephalogram (EEG) to look at the brain’s activity.
