Anmol's story
During a routine eye examination at age 7, Anmol’s optometrist detected a swollen optic nerve. He explained to Anmol’s family that this could be the result of pressure due to a brain tumor. They were referred to pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. John Ruge.
At their initial meeting, Dr. Ruge requested an MRI for Anmol. The results pointed to a diagnosis of tectal glioma in the mid-brain.
Dr. Ruge suggested a ventriculoscopic surgery for Anmol, which would relieve the pressure. True to his reputation for compassion, Dr. Ruge specifically told Anmol’s parents he would watch over him during this surgery as if he was one of his own. Within three days, Dr. Ruge performed the successful surgery.
Following surgery, Dr. Ruge advised MRI checkups every six months as well as quarterly eye examinations. With close monitoring, Anmol has had two additional surgeries which were both successful.
