Many children are afraid of receiving shots. We reduce their fears and treat their pain by putting medication into their IV lines or by giving them medicine by mouth. Encourage your child to speak up when he or she is hurting. We can relieve pain without causing more pain.

Some parents refuse pain medication for their children because they fear a reaction. Side effects vary for each medicine and each child but can be prevented and/or treated. Common side effects of pain medicine include constipation, drowsiness/sedation, nausea/vomiting or itching.

 

Every child has a right to adequate pain management. Always tell a nurse if your child is hurting so the pain can be quickly controlled.

Many parents feel their kids' pain cannot be relieved. Pain can be relieved, but only if you let a nurse or doctor know when your child is hurting.

Addiction is extremely rare among those being treated for pain regardless of age.
