Head-shape evaluation clinic
Find a doctorSince the Back-to-Sleep Campaign started in the early 1990s, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of babies with flattened heads, also known as positional plagiocephaly or brachycephaly. The following factors may also contribute to problems with your baby's head shape.
- A separate condition called torticollis (favored turning of the neck to one side).
- When babies spend too much time on their backs or in carrying devices. (Once your baby is comfortable lying on their tummy while awake, it's important to encourage tummy time for their head shape and muscle development.)
- Muscle imbalances that begin during fetal life and can contribute to functional or developmental delays.
Importance of early head shape evaluation
Due to the multiple factors and complexities involved, it's best to use a team approach to handle positional head shape differences. Have your child’s head shape evaluated early so a more serious problem of craniosynostosis can be ruled out. If caught early, a baby's head shape may be corrected with conservative treatments like repositioning techniques and therapy. Sometimes, a molding helmet is the best choice for treatment.
