Idiopathic scoliosis

Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common spinal deformity in the world, with occurring in adolescents from the ages of 10-18, however this is common in girls and can occur in younger children. There is no definite cause of idiopathic scoliosis. Symptoms consist of one hip higher than the other, uneven waistline, tilted and uneven shoulders, and uneven arm length when standing straight. Signs and symptoms of idiopathic scoliosis may resemble other spinal conditions or deformations so it's always best to consult with one of our physicians.

Idiopathic scoliosis testing & diagnosis

Early detection of idiopathic scoliosis is very important for successful treatment. Our physicians will conduct a thorough family and medical history along with appropriate testing. Testing may include:

  • X-ray: Creates a digital image of the precise location of the abnormal spinal bones and internal tissues.
  • CT scan (computed tomography): More detailed images that shows the bones, fat, organs and muscles.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): Can assess the spinal cord with detail along with producing images of the organs and structures throughout the body.

Idiopathic scoliosis treatments

We offer both surgical and nonsurgical treatments for idiopathic scoliosis. Nonsurgical idiopathic scoliosis treatments consist of observation and monitoring, physical therapy (including the Schroth Method), bracing and casting. Surgical procedures may include spinal fusion, dual posterior growing rods or vertebral column resection.
